RESPONDING TO LITERATURE
The "why" of responding to literature

Readers are asked to write responses of their reading for a variety of reasons:

to verify that the book has been read completely and in detail
to provide an opportunity for the reader to reflect in written
form his/her reading perspectives of the material
to show growth as "reflective practitioner" -- responses containing personal,
analytical, and interpretive elements, combined with knowledge being gained
              from class and texts
to serve as possible "advertisement" for other readers
