RESPONDING TO LITERATURE
Difference between a summary
and writing a response

SUMMARY:

a short retelling of the plot with brief comments related to
genre criteria (illustrations if necessary). Short, but with
enough materials to bring back the tenor of the story long
after the completion of reading it.

RESPONSE:

an in-depth reflection and analysis of a work of literature.
The writer considers concerns that are personal, analytical,
and interpretive. Illustrations must be discussed at length,
regardless of the genre (re color, shape, line, graphics...).
In considering both genre criteria and literary elements
[see handouts], a full response is generally of much greater
length than a summary and invests little or no discourse on
the retelling of the story.
