| The Why and How of Celebration in a Diverse World |
The word holiday is defined as "a
day on which work is suspended by law or custom."
However, in developing an awareness of children's literature which presents the
concept
of CELEBRATION, perhaps we need to consider the various arenas in which
celebrated
days occur.
| country | religion |
time of year (new year, seasons..) |
political | famous person | ethnicity |
If only one category is chosen to "celebrate,"
are we then as educators creating a
frame of preference? When asked to develop a list of "good"
children's books for
the holidays, I must examine first, what is considered a "good"
book,
and second, that celebration means many things to many people.
Therefore, I can only present GENERAL LINKS, as the contents of any of the areas above will constantly change. As for what is a "good" book, ... that's an entirely different story. I am working on a page on "responding to literature" in the next few months.
